Brendan Rodgers to offer Scott Brown coaching opportunity at Leicester City

Former Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly offered Scott Brown a coaching opportunity at Leicester City after the Celtic legend left his player-coach role at Pittodrie.

The 36-year-old left Celtic and moved to Aberdeen in the summer to be a playing assistant coach under former Hibs teammate Stephen Glass. It is thought the opportunity to get his teeth into a serious coaching role was at the forefront in that decision to move North.

Brown, was left in an awkward position over the past few weeks however when Glass was sacked by Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack and replaced by Irishman Jim Goodwin who had previously been at St Mirren. Goodwin made it clear to Brown there would be limited opportunity for him to continue to coach at the club, leaving him with a big decision to make.

Brown decided to terminate his Aberdeen contract and will now take time to consider his future and his options with his family. The former Scotland captain has allegedly been inundated with offers of support and help since he announced his playing retirement.

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon was yesterday named the new boss at Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia, leading to people to suggest Brown could end up joining his old manager in Cyprus. However, in a new twist it’s another former boss and fellow Irishman Brendan Rodgers who has emerged the more likely to rekindle a working relationship with the former Celtic captain.

Brown and Rodgers worked together at Celtic for almost three years, with Brown continuing to captain the Hoops under Rodgers and enjoying a mini-resurgence late in his career under the Carnlough native. Rodgers of course left Parkhead mid-season in 2019 to join Leicester, leaving the Celtic faithful angry and upset about the way he snuck out the door after previously saying he couldn’t be happier at the club.

It was rumoured at the time that the players at Celtic were just as upset and shocked by his departure, however it now looks like his former captain Brown could be set to join him once more this time at Leicester. It will be viewed as a huge opportunity for Brown to learn from a top manager operating at a high level with a Premier League club.

A report in Daily Record suggests the two have been in contact since Brown made the call to terminate his time in the Granite City and explore a full-time move into coaching. It’s said that Rodgers has invited his former skipper down to spend some time with him and his coaching staff at the King Power Stadium to garner much needed experience of coaching at the highest level.

It would give Brown a much-needed insight into top-level management as he aims to revive his own coaching career. Rodgers has also vowed to help Brown get back in the game and to help wherever he can in terms of helping him to land a new role.

As Celtic fans we would all love to see Brown back at the club but most imagine it would have to be at an underage level for the meantime. No one including Scott himself would want to see him pushed upon Ange Postecoglou and it would be up to the Australian to decide what, if any, role he would play within the first team coaching set up in the future.

Personally I think it would probably be best if Brown learned his trade elsewhere in the meantime but I think most of us would love to see him come back to the club in a senior coaching or management capacity in the future. This however should only happen if he has proved his credentials elsewhere.

Hailing from Cushendall in the North of Ireland my formative years were spent watching Celtic during our barren spell through the 90's which meant I have appreciated our recent trophy-laden spell even more. Favourite matches home and away I've attended has to be beating Man Utd 1-0 at Celtic Park and being with my 2 brothers watching us beat Lazio 2-1 in Rome. Best away day experience? Has to be Munich with friends from Coatbridge...what a few days!

  1. This would be a good placevto start for Broonie. Leaving one pub team in Aberdeen for another in Leicester will let him gain experience enough to step up to a big club should we come calling.
The only concerns I’d have though is whether or not he could believe anything Rodgers has to say, and of course, if an opportunity comes along for Rodgers we all know from experience that he’s gone in a heartbeat, as well as his fall from grace this season edging him ever closer to the door in Leicester.
