Brilliant – Australian media react to Rangers’ withdrawal from Ange’s Homecoming tour

Rangers confirmed yesterday that they would be withdrawing from The Sydney Super Cup after failing to cope with the heat from their supporters. The Ange’s Homecoming Tour featured a Glasgow Derby match in Sydney in November while the World Cup takes place in Qatar.

Australian media outlet Optus Sport tweeted an excellent response to the Ibrox club’s decision, referring to Rangers as a ‘supporting act’.

The statement that Rangers posted stated that obligations to the club weren’t being met. Although, given that Celtic were first announced and the branding was all relating to Postecoglou returning to Australia and bringing his team with him. The rationale behind their withdrawal is clearly a move to placate the hoards of fans that were against the decision.

The move is said to net Celtic more money than prize money from winning the Cinch Premiership. Whilst their Glasgow rivals were said to earn less, as they were merely a marketing gimmick, the decision ruffled a few feathers and hampered relations between Rangers and their supporters. As a result, their board buckled under the pressure.

Spare a thought for the thousands of Rangers fans in Australia that have now found themselves with tickets for a Celtic friendly.

  2. A sizable money-spinning opportunity for any club, taking place at a time when every professional league in Asia is on break for the World Cup? Gee … I wonder if the organizers will be able to find a well-supported club from Japan, Korea or Southeast Asia to take the place of stRangers FC?

Oh wait. You say the list of prospective replacement clubs has already reached double-digits? What a surprise!
