Bring on the Rangers – Wednesday’s SWPL Glasgow Derby moved to Celtic Park and it’s live on BBC Alba

Fran Alonso’s exciting young Celtic side gave the club something to smile out yesterday on what was a desperately disappointing afternoon for John Kennedy and his side at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup. While that tragedy got underway the SWPL1 title challengers were negotiating a difficult away fixture of their own through in Edinburgh and made no mistake with an outstanding 5-1 that sets Alsonso’s side up perfectly for the second Glasgow Derby of the season against theRangers on Wednesday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

And the exciting news is that this home match for Celtic FC Women will NOT be taking place over at K-Park but instead will be played at Celtic Park!

That’s a match Celtic must win as they look to make it a double over their Glasgow rivals following the 1-0 win at theRangers Training Ground at the end of last year. Speaking after yesterday’s outstanding performance and result the Spanish coach was clearly thrilled by the quality of football on display from his side.

“I’m delighted. I think we played good football last week, but today I think we were even better and that’s what it’s about,” Alonso said. “You can make mistakes, but the important thing is how you come back and it’s been outstanding since,” he said after game.

“We won 5-1, but we missed six or seven clear chances after great combinations so I think it was a very professional performance.

“We limited their chances and they are a strong team. It definitely gives us confidence for future games,” Alonso added. “Every single player was great – for me, our worst player was an 8/10, so that says a lot about their mentality and how much they want to play the football we believe in.

“It’s great to see as well after comments from outside the club after the first game that they’re showing they can perform.”

With Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dead rubber game at Pittodrie being available only via PPV via Aberdeen FC’s TV channel many supporters might prefer a real title tussle at Celtic Park on Wednesday night. The crucial match for Celtic FC Women kicks off at 7.35pm and is being broadcast live on BBC Alba.

Usually Celtic’s SWPL fixtures are played out at the usually windswept K-Park in East Kilbride so it’s great news that Fran Alonso’s side are getting the chance to play this Glasgow Derby in Paradise.
