Callum McGregor’s loyalty praised as pundit suggests £20m price-tag

Celtic skipper Callum McGregor braved a broken cheekbone to lead his side out under the lights at Paradise in The Glasgow Derby. The skipper was instrumental as Ange Postecoglou’s team triumphed 3-0 before following that up with another impressive display on the road, winning 4-0 at Motherwell. Pundit Mark Guidi has hailed McGregor as many appreciate the impact that Postecoglou has had since arriving from Yokohama F Marinos. Guidi told Go Radio Football Show that McGregor would have fetched £20m last summer but instead he sought to step into the chasm left by Scott Brown.

McGregor has been a constant in Postecoglou’s team since taking over in the summer. He was a big part of the Quadruple Treble teams but opted to stay as a central part of the rebuild and Guidi suggested that he could’ve walked away. Instead, McGregor has stamped his authority on this exciting Celtic team as their captain.

“The other thing about him is his loyalty to the club. Callum McGregor could have gone and Brendan Rodgers would have taken him in a heartbeat.

“Even up to the summer there he would have taken him in a heartbeat for £20 million quid.

“But Callum McGregor has shown that loyalty. If he really pushed and wanted to rock the boat he could have got a move and wouldn’t have been short of suitors.

“And he has been rewarded because make no mistake, to captain Celtic is a massive that you shouldn’t take lightly. Something you shouldn’t take for granted.

“And if you’re not up to it, you’ll be quickly found out and the captaincy will be taken off you.

“I think it’s just given him that that new challenge that he’s probably needed because he was stale last season.”

Postecoglou and McGregor won their first trophy in their new roles in December as Celtic fought back to beat Hibs in the League Cup Final at Hampden. Now, they sit one point clear at the top of the table ahead of tonight’s fixtures. Whilst all the talk has been about Matt O’Riley, Tom Rogic and Reo Hatate in the last week – McGregor has been exceptional. He is the best central midfielder in the country and will only improve under Ange.
