Celtic 3 Morton 0 – Medal Winning Marvin Compper’s one and only appearance in the Hoops

Marvin Compper the experienced Bundesliga defender signed by Rodgers in the January 2018 transfer window from RB Leipzig for just over £1million, eventually made his debut against Morton in the Scottish Cup on this day three years ago. We actually got an exclusive on the morning of the game, that Compper would be starting and at the time the support were keen to see what kind of a player he was going to be.

There weren’t too many Celtic fans inside Celtic Park that afternoon and none realised that they were watching what would be Compper’s last appearance in The Celtic first team. He didn’t even see out the 90 minutes, going off in the latter stages to be replaced by Callum McGregor with 83 minutes played. In goals that afternoon was Dorus de Vries, who only avoids being the worst Rodgers signing due to the dismal return on investment Celtic got from the German.

Morton held out well in what was a fairly low key affair but Moussa Dembele eventually broke the deadlock in 62 minutes and doubled the lead ten minutes later from the penalty spot. Odsonne Edoaurd scored a third in stoppage time and by that time Martin Compper had been and gone as a Celtic player.

He’s still lurking around, presumably with no chance of a move to Leicester City.

Compper talked about trying to get a move in January so that he could continue playing but the money he’s on at Celtic made that unlikely to happen.

Looks like Celtic will have to bite the bullet and sort out a pay-off in the summer.

Here are the highlights from Martin Compper’s entire 81 minute Celtic career…thanks Brendan.
