Celtic and adidas targeting global Irish diaspora is a clever strategy

The new Celtic top is causing quite the stir. Just as well social media wasn’t around thirty years ago when Celtic released this one…

Celtic yesterday released their new top and it’s caused a bit of a reaction, and not exactly in a positive way.

In my own opinion it’s not the best, but it isn’t the worst we’ve ever had, and like every other top it will grow on you eventually. Folk may moan, but at the end of the day it will sell in great numbers, you can count on that.

Celtic and the folk at Adidas aren’t daft and with this new kit release they are clearly trying to tap into the global Irish diaspora, something that David Low was recently talking about while being interviewed by Tino on The Celtic Exchange podcast – it’s well worth a watch if you haven’t see it.

We have released our fair share of strips throughout the years that have caused quite a stir, but none more so than a couple of efforts back in the 1990s, yes you know what ones I’m referring to.

The first one I’m eluding to as pictured above is of course the monstrosity of an effort from Umbro complete with the red and blue advertisement of peoples ford on a backdrop of white etched across it in 1991 which can only described as something conjured up by an explosion in a paint factory, and hands up I owned one back then as many of you did.

The one below was another that turned many heads, and that of course was the 1995-96 effort that was famously dubbed as the ‘cheese and onion strip’ yet another I purchased as many of you did back in the day.

Thank heavens that social media wasn’t around thirty years ago as we can only imagine the meltdown that these efforts would have inflicted!

Funnily enough both tops are now popping back up as the retro range continues to grow in popularity. Aye, the folks at Celtic who make these decisions aren’t daft.

  1. I get the Irish roots but Celtic is a Scottish club. I would love to see the Adidas designers work on something with the Scotland colour scheme and see what they come up with. 😂
