Stephen Welsh was stretchered off in the 4-0 win over St Mirren last night and there were fears that the 21-year-old could face a spell on the sidelines. However, the extent of his injury has been revealed following the painful tackle from Jon Obika.
However, the Daily Record are reporting that the defender has managed to get away from the tackle with just bruising on his ankle. Celtic have suffered from injuries to their defenders already this season with Christopher Jullien suffering multiple injuries resulting in Kris Ajer having multiple partners in defence as well as the pairing of Nir Bitton/Shane Duffy.
Supporters will breathe a sigh of relief as the prospect of Shane Duffy returning to the team may have been concerning. However, it is likely that Welsh will be cleared to return sooner rather than expected. The player will be assessed ahead of the trip to McDiarmid Park to face Callum Davidson’s St Johnstone.
Celtic currently sit 18 points behind Rangers with a game in hand on the league leaders. The club dropped 12 points in the month of January, despite a promised review of the management team. The club lost out on Ben Davies, Mark McKenzie and Filip Benkovic in the January window.
