Celtic centre-back target plans to leave this summer, says report

It is highly doubtful any Celtic fans will have heard of Piero Hincapie prior to the Copa America taking place this summer; however, after some stellar performances at the heart of Ecuador’s defence throughout the tournament, the 19-year old has become hot property – with more than just Celtic perking their interest in the prodigy.

Hincapie, who plays for Argentine side Club Atletico Talleres, has shone in the Ecuador side across the tournament, with his stellar performances raising the interests of European giants PSG, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich, with Newcastle also interested in the youngster.

His current side Talleres paid £750,000 for a 50% stake in him last summer from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle, however it appears they will not be able to hold on to him much longer given the interest shown by the European powerhouses above.

After being at the heart of the Ecuador side which nullified Brazilians such as Vinicius, Firmino, Richarlison and Everton Soares in last weeks 1-1 draw, attentions from scouts all across Europe have turned to Hincapie – and with the 6ft youngster due to come up against Argentina on Sunday, he will once again be thrust into the spotlight against some of the world’s best attackers.

Speaking to ESPN, Hincapie was quoted as dreaming of playing in the bigger leagues; something which he may have to force in order for it to materialise.

“A player dreams of going abroad and playing in better leagues. If the opportunity to leave is given, it would be best to take that leap.

“I haven’t talked to (chairman Andres) Fassi yet. I can’t promise the fans that I’m going to stay. You never know what’s going to happen.”

With reported interest from the champions of Spain, Germany and a Champions League semi-finalist, it may be hard to see Celtic in the same light. However, with playing time potentially a key factor, that is something that Celtic can definitively offer Hincapie that the others cannot. Watch this space…
