Celtic closing in on £3.5m deal for defensive target, according to report

Celtic are reportedly closing in on a £3.5m deal for Aaron Hickey. Sun Sport claims that the 19-year-old is subject of a bid from Ange Postecoglou’s side as he continues his enormous rebuild ahead of the new season.

Postecoglou has sanctioned an official bid for the former Lennoxtown youngster and the report states that the clubs are expected to begin talks for the youngster this week. The player actually made just 12 appearances in his debut season in Italy, catching COVID-19 in December. In the BBC’s coverage of The Scottish Cup Final, Hickey showed himself living alone in Bologna and whilst it was an incredible move for the Scotland U21, it must have had an incredible impact on him – especially given the COVID restrictions on travel. As a result, he may want a return to Scotland.

Hickey made 33 appearances for Hearts in an incredible individual season that saw him complete a £1.8m move to Bologna. This move actually netted Celtic around £500k due to the clause that the club inserted when the Tynecastle side raided Lennoxtown for Hickey.

Celtic currently have Greg Taylor and Bolingoli as the first team options with Adam Montgomery as one for teh future. Taylor has been a steady, if not unimaginative, addition joining from Killie in 2019. Bolingoli, who was signed in the same season, is expected to leave the club after an extremely difficult season on and off the pitch.
