Celtic eye €6m rated goalkeeper as a potential Fraser Forster alternative

It’s still not clear if Celtic will manage to keep hold of Fraser Forster for next season, so it makes total sense to start sounding out possible alternatives.

A report from The Daily Record indicated that Celtic were feeling hopeful of securing another loan deal to sign the big keeper from Southampton, but that clearly indicated that the deal isn’t done.

That means that alternatives may need to be found, so this report from Greek outlet SDNA will make for interesting reading.

Worryingly they claim that Fraser Forster could cost as much as €20m, but the main focus of the story is AEK Athens keeper Vasilis Barkas, as they claim that European clubs are starting to show an interest.

They claim that Barcelona might also be interested in signing him, but interestingly they say that relations between AEK and Celtic are positive after their Champions League qualifying match a few years ago.

In terms of the price tag it’s suggested that Celtic are not willing to go any higher than €6m, but they don’t say if that would be enough to sign him at this point.

The 26 year old keeper doesn’t have a huge deal of experience, with less than 100 league appearances under his belt at this point in his career.

Despite that he has now established himself as the number one choice for AEK, and he’s also played 10 times for his country.

Obviously it would be preferable to keep Forster after his exploits last season, but it will be interesting to see what happens if a deal with Southampton can’t be agreed.
