Celtic FC Foundation’s ‘Football For Good’ Initiative Reaches Half A Million Pounds As £50k Donation From James Anderson Is Pledged To The Cause

Celtic have, today, announced that the incredible £50,000 donation from James Anderson has been handed to Celtic FC Foundation, bringing the charity’s Football For Good Fund to £500,000!

Donations were made available to all Scottish clubs through the SPFL Trust in relation to the Covid-19 Crisis and Celtic has passed this on to support the work of the club’s Foundation and, in particular, the Football for Good initiative.

Celtic FC Foundation had already raised £450,000 in donations, through the club’s supporters, in order to help those in need during the current crisis. The campaign began by providing hot meals to NHS staff in Glasgow hospitals, but has subsequently gone on to offer support to a wide range of people.

Funds have been provided to 55 organisations which support vulnerable children, families and the homeless. Meanwhile, the Foundation also delivered two projects through their partnership with Glasgow North-East Foodbank. This work centred around a free self-referral service providing food parcels for people living in Glasgow affected by the current COVID-19 crisis, as well as a service providing food parcels to those who have been discharged from hospital.

Glasgow is of course Celtic’s home city and unsurprisingly, it has been the core location of the club’s recent work. However, the Celtic FC Foundation has also extended its support during this global pandemic to a variety of locations across the UK and Ireland. Indeed, people in Skye, Greenock, Oban, Edinburgh, London, Newcastle, Dublin and Belfast have felt the benefits of the hearty Celtic support. Astonishingly, the Foundation has also supported two of its partner charities in New York during this period, providing food and essentials to vulnerable children, families and the homeless in the US city.

Speaking to the Celtic website, Chief Executive of Celtic FC Foundation, Tony Hamilton said: “We would like to sincerely thank James for the very generous donation he has made. This very kind contribution will further enhance the work which we have been involved in since March this year helping so many people in need. Our work across so many areas continues to make a real difference. We are very grateful to James for this gesture.”

It was also announced that Aberdeen and Kilmarnock will be donating their cheques to charity.

It was announced earlier this week on the SPFL Trust Twitter page, that they had received the single largest personal donation in Scottish Football history. James Anderson’s initial £3m grant is intended to help support SPFL clubs and their communities during Covid-19.

Upon making the donation, Anderson said: “Football is at the heart of communities across Scotland, and there are not many societal organisations that bring people together nowadays, to catch them in a net when they fall.”
