Celtic FC Women must clear Hamilton Hurdle to set up Beautiful Sunday

With three crucial games in just over a week and a squad day-out at Hampden thrown into the mix, Fran Alonso’s Celtic FC Women side are back in action in the SWPL1 this evening with an away match against Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park (kick-off is 8pm).

This game is sandwiched between that joyous Glasgow Derby skelping on Friday night where a 3-0 win over theRangers – a side who had not sampled the bitter taste of a league defeat since June 2021 – and that set the tone for the weekend with Ange Postecoglou’s side going on to add to the weekend of misery for the Ibrox followers with a 2-1 League Cup triumph at the National Stadium.

That Friday night win took Celtic FC Women to the top of the league level on points with Glasgow City who had a game in hand – against Aberdeen on Sunday. They duly won that one so Celtic are now back to being three points behind Glasgow City with theRangers a further four points behind Fran Alonso’s side.

Celtic have the superior goal difference and the games this evening will see both sides anxious to avoid any banana skins ahead of the Celtic v Glasgow City match on Sunday afternoon.

If Celtic can get nine points from nine in this crucial spell then Fran Alonso’s Celtic side will be in a great position come Sunday evening to go on and win the SWPL1 title for the first time in Celtic’s history.

Tonight Fran Alonso will rotate the squad so the players who started on the bench on Friday night – Otto, Robertson, Shen, Fergusson, Bowie, Goldie, Cusack and McAneny – are likely to feature in the starting line-up or perhaps come on at the interval if Celtic can wrap up points in the first half.

The games this evening involving the top three are as follows:

Glasgow City v Motherwell (that game is live on BBC ALBA, with a 7.35pm kick-off).

Hamilton Accies v Celtic (New Douglas Park, Hamilton kick-off 8pm entry details below)

theRangers v Partick Thistle (kick-off 8pm).

It would be a major surprise of any of the top three dropped points this evening and for both Glasgow City and Celtic it will be about getting some early goals then game management will kick in ahead of the big match on Sunday.

Fran Alonso spoke to Celtic TV at Celtic Park yesterday afternoon to preview the match and there will be a media conference for the Celtic manager on Friday ahead of the game against Glasgow City on Sunday afternoon.

Very few Celtic fans will have tickets for the Scottish Premiership match away to St Mirren in the early kick-off on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 12 noon). So there’s plenty of time after watching that game to get out to Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium for the 4-10pm kick-off on Sunday For Celtic FC Women v Glasgow City.

There was a record crowd at the game against theRangers on Friday night and they’ll all be back after watching that brilliant Celtic performance. You can join them and get behind the team as they chase down Celtic’s first ever SWPL title win. Tickets are priced at just £8 for adults, £4 for concessions and there’s a parent/child combo ticket for just £10. You can purchase HERE.

But before that Celtic must get the three points against Hamilton this season. It’s absolutely essential. Here’s Fran Alonso’s Match Preview…
