Report claims Celtic and Rangers battling for Liverpool striker

Whoever Celtic seem to be linked with, you can always guarantee Rangers are linked shortly thereafter. This summer it has been constant with Siriki Dembele – Karamoko’s older brother – who was initially linked with the Bhoys’, before Rangers caught onto the coat tails and wanted a bit of the glory. And it has happened again this week; albeit with a much bigger target.

With Leigh Griffiths out of sight and out of mind in the eyes of Ange Postecoglou, it appears Celtic are in the race for another hitman – this time, it lands on Liverpool’s Divock Origi. A report from 90min.com suggests that Origi is actively searching for a move, as he only played 181 minutes in the league last season.

Despite this lack of game time, he is considered a Liverpool cult hero. Having scored two goals in a Champions League semi final past Barcelona, in arguably Liverpool’s most famous win ever as they overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit, he then led the line in the final – where his 87th minute goal put the final to doubt as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to win the prestigious trophy, cementing his name in Anfield folklore.

However, despite Celtic’s registered interest in the Belgian, who has twelve months left on his contract, there are other clubs interested, including West Ham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace – clubs who financially can blow Celtic out of the water with their pay packets due to the Premier League finance package.

Origi would be up there with the best strikers Celtic have had since Henrik Larsson, minus potentially Dembele and Edouard; but a move does seem hard to materialise. He’d still choose Celtic over Rangers, though…
