Celtic have been linked with two new names for the rumoured Director of Football role that incoming CEO Dominic McKay plans to implement. The club are reportedly considering a restructure of the footballing department as the Parkhead club look to build back from this disappointing season. Many feel that a modern, European approach is desirable this summer with McKay overseeing the implementation of a new strategy to take the club forward.
One name that has been mentioned today was David Webb, the former Bournemouth and Tottenham footballing executive. The Daily Mail claim that Webb, who worked with Eddie Howe with Bournemouth until 2015 when he joined Spurs in a talent acquisition role. Webb is currently unattached having left his role as Head of Football Operations with Championship side Huddersfield Town in February last year. The article cites Webb as having an in-depth knowledge of the transfer market and cites a number of players that Webb helped sign – Wilson, Son to mention a few.
Juventus’ Matteo Tognozzi was also cited as another candidate that may be considered for the role that appears inevitable. The former International Scout for Zenit, Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen has been the Scouting Manger with Juve for over three years. According to Goal, Celtic are reportedly considering a move to make the Italian a Director of Football and drawing upon his contacts across Europe.
Manchester City’s Football Partnership and Football Pathways Manager Fergal Harkin has been linked with the role, owing to the relationship between The City Football Group and Celtic. Harkin has helped find and provide professional development pathways to a number of young player. He is potentially the most attractive candidate given the amount of influence he has with the Etihad club. The links that City have across the world are phenomenal and Harkin has helped cultivate that
