Celtic loan star Maryan Shved told to quarantine

It has been confirmed by Belgian side Mechelen that Celtic’s Maryan Shved – currently on a season long loan from the Scottish Champions – is one of six players currently in quarantine after William Togui tested positive for COVID-19. In an official statement on the club’s website, KV Mechelen provided more details.

“The last corona test on Tuesday in the run-up to the game against Charleroi confirms that there are no new infections. William Togui, on the other hand, has to be quarantined for an additional week.

“Togui still tested weakly positive and has not built up enough antibodies to train and play with the group again.

“The five other players in quarantine – Sofiane Bouzian, Maryan Shved, Aster Vranckx, Bas Van den Eynde and Victor Wernersson – are still being tested today.”

The Ukrainian international failed to make the break-through under Neil Lennon after being signed by Celtic shortly before Brendan Rodgers jumped ship to Leicester. The former Liverpool manager questioned the signing saying that Celtic had about a million wingers.

Shved however was a popular player among the support, who had watched his scoring exploits on You Tube, and most couldn’t quite understand how he was never really given a chance – despite scoring a screamer in a European qualifier early last season.

We understand that Shved failed to adapt sufficiently to life in Scotland and at Celtic and it could be that the chance to develop for him will come while with the small Belgian side.

For now though he’s going to be frustrated having to go through the self isolation protocols.
