Celtic loanee Johnny Kenny will be in action in the Champions League tomorrow night as his side Shamrock Rovers face Icelandic champions Breidablik in Dublin.
The Irish Champions enter the 2023/24 UEFA Champions league at the first qualifying round stage, with Rovers needing to progress through four rounds of qualifying to reach the group stage proper.
The Irish Hoops recovered from a difficult start to their season and now sit top of the Irish Premier Division by four points. Stephen Bradley’s side will look to make further inroads into Europe this season after making the group stages of the UEFA Conference League last year.
Kenny has endured a mixed start to his Celtic career since joining in 2022. After impressing for Celtics B team, the Sligo man was sent on loan to Scottish Championship side Queens Park, making 12 appearances but failing to score or provide an assist.
This resulted in his loan being cancelled in January with the player deciding to return back to Ireland where he felt he could recapture his best form.
The Irish u21 international started the season brightly for Rovers but has struggled with consistency, scoring four times and providing three assists in 23 league games this season. Rovers striking options aren’t without quality in depth with fellow strikers Aaron Greene and Rory Gaffney providing 12 goals for the Dublin side this season.
Kenny is without doubt a talented footballer and a lengthy run in Europe will only further his development with eyes to returning to Glasgow a better player.
