Celtic May Have Dodged A Bullet In Benkovic

Celtic were widely linked with a January transfer move for Filip Benkovic. The Leicester City defender, who cost the Foxes £15m, was a popular figure at Celtic Park in his loan spell with the club. Such popularity, coupled with injuries to the Celtic backline, led to many supporters calling for another loan deal to bring the centre half back to Paradise. Meanwhile, the media consistently rumoured that the club were in talks with Leicester over a loan deal, with some sports reporters even suggesting that Kris Ajer may be going the other way.

Benkovic ultimately signed on loan for Bristol City, and his start to life in the Championship hasn’t exactly gone to plan. Indeed, the Croatian has come in for some stick from fans at Ashton Gate, especially after his defensive blunder during the 3-1 defeat against Birmingham this weekend.

Given that Benkovic has spent so much time on the sidelines, either through injury or due to competition for places, it is quite possible that Celtic have dodged a bullet based on current form… if indeed there was any truth in the Hoops’ rumoured interest.
