Celtic may need to find an alternative as £10m transfer unlikely to be pursued this Summer

It’s hard to think of a player who’s stock has risen and fallen so much within the space of a few months, but it’s been a frustrating season for Mohamed Elyounoussi.

When he initially arrived on loan from Southampton nobody really knew what to expect, but a phenomenal start to his time at Celtic led to a clamour to sign him permanently.

That started to disappear after a bad injury and an inability to get back to his best, so it would be hard to justify paying a big fee and wage to bring him back next season.

An exclusive from Football Insider has given an update on his situation, and it sounds like he won’t be back.

They indicate that Celtic were quoted a fee of around £10m to sign him on a permanent basis, while you also imagine his Premier League wages will be an issue.

As a result, they report that it’s now unlikely that Celtic will look to make that happen. They also claim that Real Sociedad were interested back in February, so perhaps they would reignite their interest to sign him.

It’s still possible that things could change and perhaps Southampton will reduce their demands on even loan him out again, but this sounds pretty conclusive at this point.

Mikey Johnston might fancy his chances of trying to make that spot his own going forward, but it’s likely that Celtic will need to look for a replacement for the Norwegian next season.
