Celtic On This Day – 11th October – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 11th October…

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 1890

Celtic with 5,000 supporters travel the short distance to Hyde Park in Springburn to play a team called Northern in the Glasgow Cup. Northern score first, but Celtic win through with goals from Willie Groves and Peter Dowds.

Peter Dowds scored

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 1919

Celtic make it 12 wins out of 12 this season with a remarkable 7-3 victory at Parkhead over Hibs in front of 15,000 fans. The football is thrilling with Patsy Gallacher scoring a hat-trick, Tommy McInally two and Johnny Gilchrist and Charlie Watson one each. Once again newspapers uniformly sing the praises of the “boy wonder” Tommy McInally.

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 1924

Celtic beat Hearts 1-0 at Parkhead thanks to a thrice-taken penalty kick. Patsy Gallacher has his first effort saved, but Hearts players had encroached. Adam McLean then has a go. He blazed it over the bar, but referee Mr Quinn had not blown his whistle. Adam and Patsy are not keen to try again, so the job falls to young Peter Wilson. Peter earns his spurs by scoring off the crossbar. He said afterwards “In my boyish enthusiasm, I just ran up and hit it. I was trembling for the rest of the game.” This incident happened in the 77th minute.

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 1930

A great day for Celtic as they win the Glasgow Cup before 71,806 fans at Hampden by beating Rangers 2-1. Although Bertie Thomson is sent off for retaliation, Charlie Napier and Jimmy McGrory score the goals to lift the trophy and perhaps give an indication that things are taking a turn for the better at Celtic Park.

WEDNESDAY 11 OCTOBER 1967

45,662 people enjoy a thrilling Celtic performance as Morton are put to the sword by the famous score of 7-1 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden tonight. The game is notable for a great individual goal (one of two) by John Hughes who was superb throughout and two goals from Jim Craig who was never really famous for his goal scoring abilities! Celtic play in all green jerseys and white pants, and the other goals are scored by Bobby Lennox, Jimmy Johnstone and Willie Wallace.
