SATURDAY 12 MARCH 1910 – Celtic, unbeaten in the Scottish Cup since 1906, see their fine record come to an end today in the semi-final at Shawfield. Without Adams, Young and McMenemy, Celtic are simply not strong enough and lose 1-3, the only goal coming from Willie Kivlichan. Celtic’s replacement goalkeeper is an eccentric Welshman called Leigh Roose who insist on running out to shake the hand of a Clyde goal scorer – an excessive act of chivalry which does not go down well with the Celtic supporters.
SATURDAY 12 MARCH 1932 – There are times when one simply has to admit that the other team are better. This happens today when the strong Motherwell team who have already put Celtic out of the Scottish Cup and are on their way to the League title beat Celtic 4-2 at Celtic Park before 29,000 – a huge crowd for 1932 in the middle of the depression. Alec Thomson and Hugh O’Donnell score Celtic’s goals, but Motherwell’s star is ex-Celt John McMenemy, son of the great Napoleon.
SATURDAY 12 MARCH 1938 – Celtic go to Firhill to beat Partick Thistle 6-1 with goals from Johnny Crum, Johnny Divers, Frank Murphy, Chic Geatons and two from Jimmy Delaney. This is a fine performance and Celtic feel that they owe their fans something, for they lost to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup last week. This will of course turn out to be a fine year for Celtic, for they will go on to win the Scottish League and the Empire Exhibition Trophy.
WEDNESDAY 12 MARCH 1969 – A night of tragedy for Celtic as they go down 0-1 to AC Milan in the quarter final of the European Cup. Probably good enough to repeat the success of two years ago, Celtic had drawn 0-0 in Milan, and now with a fanatical crowd behind them were expected to win tonight. But a bad and uncharacteristic mistake by Billy McNeill allows the Italians to score, and of course they are good enough to hold out.
SATURDAY 12 MARCH 2005 – Dunfermline Athletic are simply swept aside today at Celtic Park as John Hartson and Stilian Petrov both score twice, Craig Beattie gets another and Aiden McGeady scores with a penalty kick as Celtic win 6-0 before 58,598 at Celtic Park.
