Celtic On This Day – 14th September – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

Month 2, Day 14 of Celtic Historian David Potter’s new diary on The Celtic Star which will run throughout the new season and will highlight key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 14 September…

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 1912

Celtic put on a marvellous show at Broomfield to beat Airdrie 4-1. Quinn is still out injured, but Jimmy McMenemy, Patsy Gallacher, Peter Johnstone and Alex Gray score the goals.

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 1940

It is generally believed that if the invasion of Great Britain does not happen tonight, it won’t happen at all because darkness now falls too early and the weather is slowly deteriorating. No reports of anything untoward happening in the Channel reach Glasgow by kick-off time at Hampden where Celtic beat Queen’s Park 1-0 thanks to a Frank Murphy goal, and no German invasion occurs.

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 1963

An astonishing game is played at Celtic Park today against Third Lanark with Celtic seeming to have put all their woes behind them when they go into a four goal lead in quarter of an hour. The goals are scored by John Divers, Bobby Lennox, Paddy Turner and Frank Brogan with a penalty. But then by the 50th minute, the Celtic defence have lost four goals and the score is 4-4! The last half hour of the game is actually quite dull, for both teams are exhausted and there is no further scoring. 19,000 stand and gasp in mystified silence at all this. It is attacking football carried to extremes!

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 1985

A solemn day at Celtic Park as respects are paid to Jock Stein who died in midweek in Cardiff, but in a difficult atmosphere, Celtic then go on to beat Aberdeen 2-1 with a couple of goals from Brian McClair.

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 1991

McDiarmid Park, Perth sees a Celtic performance with no punch as the home team win 1-0. Celtic’s forward line contains Joe Miller and Tony Cascarino and is singularly inept at breaking down a spirited but not really very talented home side. Depression continues for Celtic.
