The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 16 August…
SATURDAY 16 AUGUST 1913
An excellent start to the season as Celtic beat Ayr United 5-1 at Celtic Park. Last season was a disaster, but this season looks as if it might get better as Barney Connolly scores two, Andy McAtee two and Patsy Gallacher one.
SATURDAY 16 AUGUST 1919
The first full post-war season opens with threats of boycotts etc. because of a price hike to one shilling for admission. But 12,000 are at Celtic Park to see a fine 3-1 win over Clydebank, and the name on everyone’s lips is that of Celtic’s hat-trick hero, Tommy McInally. The legend of the “boy wonder” is born.
WEDNESDAY 16 AUGUST 1961
Parkhead resounds to the boos of the 23,000 crowd as Celtic trudge off after having lost 0-1 to St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup. The strong swirling wind was no real excuse, for the play of the forwards, Bobby Carroll, Mike Jackson, John Hughes, John Divers and Steve Chalmers, particularly their shooting, was absolutely atrocious.

13,800 are at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock to see a good Celtic performance as they beat Kilmarnock 3-0 with two goals from Frank McGarvey and one from Dom Sullivan. In the second half a long-haired youngster called Charlie Nicholas appears and impresses the crowd who have heard so much about him. Young Irish goalkeeper Paddy Bonner, playing in one of his early games for the club, also does well.
SATURDAY 16 AUGUST 2003
Fresh home from a 4-0 win in Budapest, Celtic continue their goal-scoring ways with a 5-0 win over Dundee United at Parkhead. The good thing was that all 5 goal were scored by 5 different players – Shaun Maloney, Didier Agathe, Henrik Larsson, Jackie McNamara, and Alan Thompson with a penalty.
