The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary  each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 16th February 1907….

Jimmy “Napoleon” McMenemy scored

SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 1907 – Celtic and Morton draw their Scottish Cup replay 1-1 at Parkhead in front of a crowd of 25,000 thus necessitating a third game next week. In an age when “match fixing” is common, this is tactless, to put it mildly and although newspapers are aware of the laws of libel, they are not above making a few innuendoes about “another large purse”. Jimmy McMenemy scores Celtic’s goal.

SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 1924 – The Sunday Post is still in shock about Ramsay MacDonald of the Labour Party being Prime Minister, but nevertheless tells us that that was an undistinguished 1-0 for Celtic against Queen’s Park at Parkhead today. Adam McLean scores the only goal of the game for Celtic at half time.

SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 1980 – Some of the 32,000 crowd are on their way home out of Parkhead convinced that Celtic are out of the Scottish Cup when Murdo MacLeod rescues them with a late equalizer. St.Mirren had scored in the first half through Frank McDougall, and looked good enough to hold on to their lead. But Celtic’s late goal earns them a replay at Love Street on Wednesday night.

Paul McStay scored a hat-trick

SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 1985 – Celtic, without much bother, beat Inverness Thistle (this was before the amalgamation of Thistle and Caley) 6-0 at Celtic Park in the Scottish Cup with a hat-trick from Paul McStay and one goal each from Maurice Johnston, Murdo MacLeod and Frank McGarvey. Celtic supporters in the Jungle, happy with the news that Rangers are losing to Dundee, will Inverness to score a goal but Celtic’s defence stubbornly hold out, and the referee refuses to give them a penalty.

SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2008 – A good 3-0 win over Hearts today at Celtic Park confirms the good recent form of Celtic. Good goals by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Scott McDonald and Andreas Hinkel (his first for the club) are scored as Celtic now seem to be recovering from an unsatisfactory spell at the turn of the year.

I am Celtic author and historian and write for The Celtic Star. I live in Kirkcaldy and have followed Celtic all my life, having seen them first at Dundee in March 1958. I am a retired teacher and my other interests are cricket, drama and the poetry of Robert Burns. David Potter passed away on 29 July 2023 after a short illness. He was posthumously awarded a Special Recognition award by Celtic FC at the club's Player of the Year awards in May 2024. David's widow Rosemary accepted the award to huge applause from the Celtic Supporters in the Hydro.
