Celtic Historian David Potter each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 19th November 1898. David’s latest book The Celtic Rising ~ 1965 The Year Jock Stein Changed Everything is out now, is selling extremely fast and is available at Celtic stores and via Celtic Star Books.
SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 1898 – The Dundee Courier says “second to none in popularity of the Dundee football population are Celtic FC”, and this is proved when a large crowd appeared at Carolina Port to see Dundee 1 Celtic 4. The conditions were a little slippery but the frost was rapidly thawing. Jack Bell, John Divers, Peter Somers and James Fisher are the scorers, but the orchestrator in chief is Sandy McMahon.
SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 1921 – A good 3-1 win for Celtic today at Celtic Park against Queen’s Park with goals from Willie McStay, Joe Cassidy and Tommy McInally. Because of the foul weather, only 7,000 are there.
SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 1966 – An astonishing game at East End Park, Dunfermline sees Celtic win 5-4 thanks to a last minute Joe McBride penalty kick. Three times Celtic are two goals down but fight back, and even the hardest-hearted of Celtic fans will admit that the Pars deserve a point. For Celtic, Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone, Bertie Auld and Joe McBride all score and one of Dunfermline’s goals is scored by Alex Ferguson. The 22,000 crowd packed into the tight East End Park ground are totally drained at the end of the game.
SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 1983 – Disappointingly and unexpectedly, Celtic go down 2-4 to St Mirren at Love Street. The goals are scored by Tommy Burns and Roy Aitken, but it seems very much that Celtic have taken their eye off the ball in view of their UEFA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest (Brian Clough and all) on Wednesday night.
WEDNESDAY 19 NOVEMBER 1997 – 49,427 are at Parkhead and see a good game between the two members of the Old Firm, but it looks as if Celtic are going to lose their second game against Rangers in eleven days. They are 0-1 down with time running out, until Alan Stubbs scores with his head. This will be a very significant result by the end of the season.
