Month 3, Day 21 of Celtic Historian David Potter’s new diary on The Celtic Star which will run throughout the new season and will highlight key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 21st October…
SATURDAY 21st OCTOBER 1911
A major disappointment today as the team go down 1-3 to Rangers at Ibrox with young Andy McAtee scoring the only goal for Celtic. The weather was unpleasant, and Celtic, without the injured Quinn and McMenemy, struggled. Even so, they had a little bad luck and might even have earned a draw.

SATURDAY 21st OCTOBER 1922
After a few disappointing performances of late, this was a far better performance with a 1-0 win over Morton at Cappielow. Joe Cassidy scored the only goal of the game.

SATURDAY 21st OCTOBER 1939
Celtic play their first game in the war-time Western League, and it is not a good start, as the team go down 3-4 before 10,000 fans (most of whom have their gas masks in case of enemy bombing) at Parkhead to Hamilton Accies. Joe Carruth, Johnny Crum and Frank Murphy score the goals, but there is an unreal air to proceedings.

WEDNESDAY 21st OCTOBER 1970
Celtic beat Waterford 7-0 in the European Cup. Willie Wallace scores a hat-trick and Bobby Murdoch and Lou Macari two each, but that is only half the story. The game had been transferred to Dublin, but is badly disrupted by serious crowd trouble. The trouble is caused deliberately by thugs from Northern Ireland with no intention to do anything other than discredit Celtic.

SATURDAY 21st OCTOBER 2000

Without being in any way brilliant, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic team maintain their good form by beating Dundee United 2-1 at Celtic Park before a crowd of 59,323. It was fairly stuffy and predictable defensive performance from United, but Henrik Larsson and Alan Thompson scored the goals.
