Celtic On This Day – 23rd March – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary  each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 23rd March 1901…

Johnny Campbell scored

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 1901 – Celtic reach their seventh Scottish Cup final when they beat St Mirren 1-0 at Celtic Park through a Johnny Campbell goal. The play is described by The Scottish Referee as being “hard rather than brilliant” and the “shooting of both sides was of the most wretched order” but Johnny Campbell’s goal just before half time sent the Celtic “sympathisers” away home happy.

Jimmy “Napoleon” McMenemy scored

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 1912 – Today at Pittodrie Celtic field both their inside forward wizards in Patsy Gallacher and Jimmy McMenemy with Napoleon now at inside left to allow Patsy to play at inside right. McMenemy scores Celtic’s only goal in the 1-1 draw. It had previously been thought that they could not both play together in the same team. Alec McNair and Jimmy Quinn are away playing for Scotland v England in a 1-1 draw at Hampden.

Alec Byrne and Neil Mochan with Willie Fernie behind

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 1957 – 109,145 are at Hampden to see the Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Kilmarnock. Celtic seem to be heading out of the competition until a late Johnny Higgins header rescues them and earns a replay on Wednesday night.

Frank Brogan scored

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 1963 – Celtic today show just what they are capable of as they beat Dundee 4-1 at Parkhead in bright spring sunshine. This Dundee side won the League Championship last season and have reached the semi-final of the European Cup this year. Today however they are just swept aside with goals from Frank Brogan, John Hughes, Bobby Craig and an own goal, and Billy McNeill even misses a penalty!

UNDAY 23 MARCH 2008 – Celtic beat Gretna 3-0 at Almondvale, Livingston. Only 3,561 appear for what must be one of Celtic’s lowest ever attendances. The TV audience see a regulation Celtic victory with goals from Scott McDonald, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras.
