Celtic On This Day – 26th September – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

Month 2, Day 26 of Celtic Historian David Potter’s new diary on The Celtic Star which will run throughout the new season and will highlight key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 26 September…

SATURDAY 26 SEPEMBER 1914

‘Sniper’ Jimmy McColl

There is a growing body of opinion which feels that football ought to be stopped for the duration of the war, but 14,000 people at Dens Park would not agree with that as they saw a fine game in which Celtic beat the home side 3-1 with Jimmy McColl scoring twice and Patsy Gallacher once. The crowd was noticeable for the amount of soldiers in uniform mingling among other supporters and enjoying the football. Meanwhile the war is being fought with intense ferocity across the Channel.

MONDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 1927

Jimmy McGrory scores five as Celtic beat Third Lanark 7-0 in the semi-final of the Glasgow Cup before 9,000 fans on the Holiday Monday. Paddy Connolly and Adam McLean score the other two goals. Tommy McInally playing against his old team, entertains and clowns throughout the entire game.

WEDNESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 1962

Celtic play their first ever game in Europe today against Valencia of Spain in what was then called the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Celtic lose 2-4, their goals coming from an own goal and then a fine strike from Bobby Carroll. Only a very few Celtic fans travel to Spain to accompany the team.

SATURDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 1992

Parkhead is an angry place at the final whistle today as Celtic go down 1-2 to Partick Thistle before a crowd of 21,486. It comes after a defeat in the League Cup semi-final to Aberdeen on Wednesday night, and is now the fourth defeat in the calendar month of September. Andy Payton scores Celtic’s only goal on a miserable afternoon.

TUESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2006

Kenny Miller scores a penalty kick as Celtic beat Copenhagen 1-0 in the Champions League. The Danish team seem to have few attacking ambitions and it is a poor game, although a welcome victory.
