Month 2, Day 28 of Celtic Historian David Potter’s new diary on The Celtic Star which will run throughout the new season and will highlight key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 28 September…
MONDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 1914
Celtic beat Clyde 3-0 at Celtic Park in the Scottish League, thereby avenging the Glasgow Cup defeat. Goals are scored by Jimmy McMenemy, Johnny Browning and Jimmy McColl. That very night, Clyde’s pavilion at Shawfield is burned down, and Clyde are compelled to share with Celtic at Celtic Park for the rest of the war.
MONDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 1936
65,000 are at Ibrox this Holiday Monday to see Celtic go down narrowly to Rangers in the Glasgow Cup semi-final. Willie Buchan scores first for Celtic, but Rangers equalise and then score a late heart-breaking goal. The standard of football is high throughout.
SATURDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 1957
At Ibrox in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, Celtic book their place in the final by beating Clyde 4-2. Clyde were missing several players because of the flu outbreak, but one feels that with Celtic on this form they could beat anyone. Bobby Collins was the man of the match, scoring one goal and being instrumental in the other goals scored by Billy McPhail, Sammy Wilson and Willie Fernie. Rangers, having beaten Brechin City in the other semi-final will provide the opposition at Hampden on October 19th. It will be the first ever Scottish League Cup final between the sides.
WEDNESDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 1966
Celtic’s quest for the European Cup starts tonight with a 2-0 win over FC Zurich at Parkhead. Tommy Gemmell and Joe McBride score the goals, but it is a nasty game with two further goals disallowed and several unsavoury incidents before 50,000 fans. The Swiss reputation for fair play takes a bit of a knock, in the opinion of Celtic fans.
