Celtic On This Day – 8th September – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 8th September…

SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 1900

Sandy McMahon scores twice today as Celtic beat Queen’s Park 2-0 at Hampden before 10,000 people. It was the first time that the two teams had met in the Scottish League because hitherto Queen’s Park had refused to enter the Scottish League. In the meantime, the Boer War continues with relentless ferocity in South Africa.

SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 1906

Jimmy Quinn scores the two goals that see Celtic into the next round of the Glasgow Cup with a 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle at Meadowside. The weather was good, but there was a rather strong wind which did not help matters, and Celtic should have won by more goals.

SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 1928

Celtic make it five straight wins in a row since the start of the season with a fine 3-0 win over Kilmarnock at Parkhead with goals from Willie Gray, Jimmy McGrory and Paddy Connolly.

SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 1962

The Celtic death wish as far as Rangers are concerned is in full spate today at Parkhead, as 72,000 watch Celtic go down 0-1 to Rangers after missing a barrow load of chances. Willie Henderson scored a late winner for Rangers. Pat Crerand missed a penalty after allowing himself to be influenced by some Baxter-inspired Rangers gamesmanship.

SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 1973

In a publicity stunt well worthy of Jock Stein’s ongoing propaganda campaign to manipulate the journalists into giving Celtic loads of publicity, Celtic come on to the field for their first home League game of the season against Clyde wearing no 8 on their shorts to signify that Celtic have now won the League for eight seasons in a row. The 27,000 crowd are taken aback but then applaud vigorously, Celtic duly win 5-0 with a hat-trick by Bobby Lennox (one was a penalty) and a goal each from talented youngsters Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain. The only sad note is the carrying off of promising youngster Brian McLaughlin with what looks like a serious injury.
