17 years ago today, Celtic 1-0 Benfica. Aiden McGeady’s solitary goal kept Celtic’s knockout stage dream alive as the Hoops continued to make Paradise a fortress for Champions League matches despite an abysmal away record. Miles Binya was sent off for the Portuguese side that night after a disgraceful challenge on Scott Brown which could have quite easily broken his leg. UEFA hammered Binya with a six-game ban following the challenge. Notably, It ended up being a massive win for Gordon Strachan’s side who finished second in the group thus qualifying for the last 16 which set up a mouthwatering tie versus Barcelona.
