Celtic on This Day – The Henrik Larsson show, Motherwell 1 Celtic 7

ON THIS DAY in 1999 Celtic travelled through to North Lanarkshire to play Motherwell in the SPL. Fir Park is always a tough place to visit and the Celtic support would have been expecting a robust performance from a determined home side.

The Celtic team facing this challenge was Gould, Boyd , Riseth, Mjallby, Mahe, McNamara, Lambert, Moravcik, Blinker, Larsson and Brattbakk.

Larsson gave Celtic the lead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes but 5 minutes later a long range effort beat Gould to level the score. Then a wonderful Lubo Moravcik free kick restored Celtic’s advantage.

Henrik added a third after some excellent footwork from the Swede in 64 minutes and shortly afterwards Celtic’s emerging superstar set up substitute Craig Burley to make it 4-1. Mark Burchill made it 5 with 5 minutes left and again Larsson was the man who made it. And seconds later he completed his hat-trick after sub Tosh McKinlay whipped in one of his trademark crosses.

And if that wasn’t enough just two minutes later Burley got to the bye-line and crossed for Larsson to bullet his header into the Motherwell net for his fourth and Celtic’s seventh of the night.

The major negative for Celtic from this game was the injury to Moravcik which would effectively end his season.
