He might not go down in history as one of the all time greats in Scottish football, but Craig Gordon has had a pretty interesting career.
From dealing with the bizarre ownership at Hearts, he made the big money move to Sunderland and was largely impressive. He was notable for making some ridiculous saves during his time in the Premier League, but then a serious injury seemed to finish his career in 2012.

After going two years without playing a game, he popped up at Celtic and completely resurrected his career. During his time in Glasgow he’s played in over 230 games and won 11 trophies – not bad for someone who was seemingly retired before joining.
The emergence of Scott Bain and incredible form of the returning Fraser Forster does seem to have pushed him to the 3rd choice goalkeeping spot in the squad.
It’s not to say he isn’t a useful option, but it does look like the modern game has started to pass him by. It’s no longer good enough for a keeper to make reflex saves and be a good shot stopper – you need to be able to play with your feet and that’s where he really struggles.
A recent report from Football Insider 247 has suggested he might look for a potential transfer in January or possibly retire at the end of the season.
Obviously Celtic would want to keep him around, but if he had the chance to move then you would imagine they might let him go. They suggest he’s on £20k a week so those wages could be useful somewhere else in the squad.
There’s no suggestion of where he might move to. A return to Hearts might make sense but they would struggle to pay anywhere close to that per week.
His time at Celtic has certainly been more incredible than many would’ve thought, but it would be a shame to see him bow out as a 3rd choice with little prospect of playing.
