“Celtic players will need a bit of that” – Pundit explains why Celtic managerial target would be the perfect fit

There’s always a debate around appointing a new manager and what type of character you want to bring in.

If everything is going well then all you really want is someone who can come in and keep that going as seamlessly as possible, but that’s not the situation at Celtic just now.

It seems pretty clear that the current squad has struggled with something mentally this season, although only they will know if it’s complacency, a lack of motivation or a discipline problem that’s hurt the performances.

It’s impossible to replace an entire team of players so it’s always the manager that has to go, and it means that the club needs to go in a different direction with their next appointment.

Neil Lennon was often accused of being too pally with some players so that needs to go, and it means someone like Chris Wilder has to be considered.

Admittedly his stock is lower this year after an awful season with Sheffield United but he can’t be completely written off, and Noel Whelan has given his thoughts on why he would be a good fit: Quotes from Football Insider

“I think he’s a manager that’s very honest in what he does. There’s no airs or graces, he’ll come out and say it like it is.

“I think a lot of the Celtic players will need a bit of that quite frankly and I think he’d be a breath of fresh air for them.

“You can see what he’s brought to Sheffield United. You can see he’s assembled that drive, that fight, that organisation which hasn’t been there at Celtic this season.

“Especially defensively at Celtic, it’s been woeful at times this season. I think he’s a very good candidate for the club, absolutely.

“It would be great for the players to have somebody like that. He has that attitude where he’ll say it how it is. There will be good man-management but there will be a lot of honesty dished out if they’re not performing.”

He would be an interesting appointment because you have to think he will produce a well-drilled team that’s more solid at the back, but is that really enough for a club like Celtic?

It sounds like the kind of appointment where you know exactly what you’re going to get and it might help to turn things round initially, but managers who rely on discipline and organisation almost always run out of steam after a year or two.

Perhaps there is more to Wilder than that and he would certainly be a solid appointment, but it may not be enough for many of the supporters.
