Celtic star named in the Team of the Tournament

CELTIC’S exciting young star Mikey Johnston has been named in the Team of the Toulon Tournament alongside his Scotland team-mate Billy Gilmour.

The Celtic player also scored the goal of the tournament in the 3-1 defeat to England in the semi-final.

Gilmour of course was at Rangers but was sold to Chelsea last season for £500,000. That could prove to be a real bargain for the Stamford Bridge club and a huge mistake by the Ibrox club.

In contrast Celtic have kept their best young players at the club and many informed opinions from within the club suggest that Johnston this season will make a real impact on the first team.

He is regarded as the best prospect to come through since Kieran Tierney and that is a high benchmark as far as comparisons go.

With both Paddy Roberts and Charly Musonda not around next season – both will be playing their football in England – Johnston has a clearer route to the first team. There has been talk that Hibs would like to take him to Easter Road as part of any deal with John McGinn going the other way – Scott Allan is already within that equation – but that is not something that Brendan Rodgers is prepared to consider.

He is well aware of Mikey Johnston’s huge potential and he will be given his chance to shine in the new season in the Celtic first team. He’ll take it too.

Here’s the team of the Toulon Tournament…

And his special goal again…

Meanwhile the latest podcast from the Football Blogging Awards Podcast of the Year for 2018 – The Celtic Star Podcast is out now. Paul John Dykes is joined by Jackie’s best mate, a player who won every domestic honour for Celtic in the 1990s – Simon Donnelly.

Simon discusses the season when Wim Jansen’s side stopped the ten; his friendship with Jackie McNamara; the brilliance of Paolo, Pierre and Henrik; his regret at not winning the league for Tommy Burns; and the meteoric rise of Andrew Robertson.
