Celtic statement on death of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota

In a day that brought heart-wrenching news to the entire footballing world, Celtic Football Club have paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, following reports of their tragic passing.

The statement, filled with compassion and solidarity, struck the right chord with everyone who read it, offering deepest condolences to the Jota family and extending thoughts to Liverpool Football Club during this devastating time.

“Everyone at Celtic Football Club sends our deepest condolences to Diogo Jota’s family and friends, following the tragic passing of Diogo and his brother,” the club’s statement read.

“Our thoughts are also with his colleagues at Liverpool Football Club during this incredibly difficult time.”

It’s a message that captures the deep connection between Celtic and Liverpool — two clubs bound not just by history and heritage, but by values of unity, compassion, and solidarity.

Jota, only recently married and a father of three young children, was a vibrant figure on the pitch and by all accounts, a beloved presence off it. The sudden loss, so close to what should have been one of the happiest chapters in his life, is beyond cruel.

Here at The Celtic Star, we wish to echo and amplify the words of the club. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jota’s wife, children, extended family, and loved ones. No words can ease such pain, but we stand with you in sorrow.

To our friends at Liverpool — the players, the staff, and that famously passionate support — you do not grieve alone. Celtic supporters everywhere, join you in mourning. There’s a bond that transcends football, and it’s felt strongest in moments like these.

You’ll Never Walk Alone is more than a motto. It’s a promise.

Rest in peace, Diogo and your brother André Silva. Forever in our thoughts.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
