Celtic strongly against European Super League plans, according to report

Celtic are strongly against the news that top European sides have broken away and created a European Super League, walking away from UEFA and the ECA, of which Peter Lawwell is a member. The plans will create a League of Greed, taking the game away from the fans and furthering inequalities in the game.

As reported by Sky Sports, Lawwell is said to be strongly against the move to create a league for wealthy clubs and away from sporting merit. Celtic and Rangers are bigger than some of the teams that are included in this new league and will exist and compete without the twelve clubs that clearly see themselves as bigger and better than everyone else.

Yesterday, it was announced that twelve teams would break away from the ECA and form the ESL. Premier League Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – as well as Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid from La Liga and AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus from Serie A. Atletico, Spurs, Man City and Arsenal have never actually won the European Cup but feel that they deserve a place at the top table of football. Ultimately, football is nothing without the fans and it will continue despite these teams.

Celtic Park has hosted some memorable European nights in our illustrious, unbroken history. Famous wins, runs to finals and even disappointing results. This is part of the game that we love and unpredictability should be embraced and not this Frankenstein monster that is borne out of greed.
