Celtic That’s The Team For Me

Celtic face Clyde in the Scottish Cup this weekend (or 12 February if Storm Ciara interferes) and look to continue the hunt for a historic quadruple treble. Neil Lennon has a 100% record in all domestic cup competitions since his return to the club and the manager will no doubt be confident of maintaining that unblemished record and banishing the memory of the infamous 2-1 loss on his last visit to Broadwood, as a player in 2006.

With the away end sold out, it’s sure to be a decent atmosphere with all the usual songs getting an airing. One such song is ‘Celtic That’s The Team For Me’ and it comes with a connection to this fixture.

‘There’s Fallon, Young and Gemmell who proudly wear the green, There’s Clark, McNeill and Kennedy the best there’s ever been, Jim Johnstone, Murdoch, Chalmers, John Divers and John Hughes…’

The players referenced in this famous Celtic anthem were those who comprised the starting line-up for the 1964 Glasgow Cup final, when Celtic defeated Clyde 2-0.

That final was held at Celtic Park on a Wednesday night in late March and marked the clubs 23rd triumph in the competition. A 19-year old Harry Hood started up front for Clyde that evening, who had defeated Rangers in the semi-final. A double over the city’s biggest clubs didn’t materialise for ‘the Bully Wee’ though, as second half goals from Chalmers (55) and Divers (60) brought the trophy to Paradise in front of 13,500 spectators.
