Andres Iniesta was interviewed about Barcelona’s 2012 defeat to Celtic, by FourFourTwo magazine today. When the world renowned midfielder was asked about the reaction of the Catalan club’s players, to the 2-1 loss at Celtic Park, he responded: “I remember that well. One goal from a corner and another on the counter. Football is wonderful for reasons like these – the team who has the ball or the better players doesn’t always win.”
Iniesta went on to talk about the unrivaled Celtic Park atmosphere that night: “I’ll never forget playing against Celtic. The atmosphere is one of the best in the world. I was fortunate to play there several times and it was always so intense.”
The four time Champions League winner closed with a great tribute to the Celtic faithful: “It was an honour to play amid such incredible noise.”
It is the words of some of the game’s greats that sum up just how good the atmosphere at Celtic Park can be on a European night. The fact that a serial winner such as Iniesta can feel the intensity of the crowd shows what a difference the support can make. Hopefully such scenes can be replicated in the Europa League at the end of this month and beyond.
