Celtic tipped to rival Premier League club in chase for £18m striker – but it doesn’t make sense

We’ve seen that transfer fees have been completely blown out of proportion in recent years, so it can be hard to figure out what actually represents value in the current market.

Celtic are in a position where they can spend a decent amount of money on players, but it needs to be well thought out.

Clubs down south might think nothing of throwing £10m+ at a player who may only feature in the League Cup or as a back-up, but at Parkhead that would be a record signing, so that just shows how uneven the playing field is here.

Realistically the prospect of Celtic spending huge money on a striker will hinge on Odsonne Edouard – as long as he stays at the club then there’s no need to do it, but this latest rumour sounds like something that would only happen if he left.

According to The Mail via HITC, Celtic and Tottenham are interested in Amiens striker Serhou Guirassy, but he would probably cost as much as £18m.

It’s also said that the French side paid £13m to sign him last Summer, so it’s hard to see him going for anything less than that.

When you consider that The BBC claimed the fee of around £8m to sign Odsonne Edouard from PSG was the club’s record fee, then sanctioning that much would be an almighty commitment.

You have to think the only way it’s possible would be if Celtic go deep into the Europa League and possibly received a giant fee for Eddy in the Summer.

If you dig a little deeper, the Amiens man has never scored more than eight league goals in a season and that was in the French second tier, so keeping Edouard would be much better for the club.

That kind of transfer fee might be acceptable for Spurs as a squad player, but it’s hard to see any situation where Celtic would spend that much on a player like him.
