Celtic to offer star man £30k a week contract as German and Italian giants start to circle

We’ve already seen that Neil Lennon has no intention of letting Odsonne Edouard leave in January. It appears that Celtic are doing more than just refusing offers, they look set to give their star player a better salary too.

A report from Footballinsider247 has claimed that ” a Celtic source” has confirmed they are willing to offer the Frenchman £30k a week to help persuade him to stay in Glasgow for a while longer.

An earlier story from The Sun seemed to indicate that the striker was being looked at by Roma, Lazio, Napoli, Dortmund and Lyon so he clearly has plenty of interest if he became available. He could probably earn a bigger wage if he did move but it shows how much Celtic value him by offering an improved deal.

He definitely has the talent and the physicality to play at the highest level in the future. A big move just now might come too soon. He’s still young so at least two more years playing regularly and leading the line for Celtic can only help to improve his game.

His current deal runs until 2022 so it’s not like there’s any immediate danger of needing to sell him. It’s hard to take these things too seriously when a report simply names ” a source” and doesn’t have any proper quotes attached to it, but it would certainly make sense from the club’s point of view.

Edouard in action

The most important thing with a new deal is to make sure they don’t commit to a release clause for the Frenchman. Transfer fees are getting increasingly ridiculous so even if an amount seemed reasonable now, it could still be a bargain in a years time.

The last thing Celtic want to do is limit the transfer fee they can eventually get for their star man. It certainly looks like he won’t be leaving any time soon.
