Celtic, two at the back, four up top then grab three goals – Fran Alonso on his tactical tricks

Yesterday Celtic were a goal down to Aberdeen as the clock reached 75 minutes and by this time Fran Alonso, who is famous for his tactical adjustments during matches, had opted to play just two at the back as Celtic piled forward in search of at least two goals to secure the three points in the later stages of this SWPL1 encounter.

As it turned out the Hoops didn’t score two goals in that last quarter of an hour, Celtic scored three and the team now have a few weeks to prepare for the SWPL League Cup final against Glasgow City at Firhill on Sunday 5 December. Let’s get as big a Celtic Support there as possible to roar on the team in the first of two cup finals for Celtic in December. Fran Alonso was absolutely delighted with the late show from his side at the Penny Cars Stadium yesterday, as you’ll see when you watch this post match interview with Celtic TV.

“I thought that we played well. Even in the first half were we were 1-0 down I thought it was against the run of play,” the Celtic FC Women manager said, obviously recovered from his eye-opening afternoon earlier in the week sitting at the top table at The Celtic AGM as all hell broke loose all around him!

“We controlled the game very well, it was just the final ball, we had so many clear chances and the final ball wasn’t quite there,” Fran said.

“So at half time we said just keep doing that. We made a couple of tactical adjustments because of the way they press us and we had so much more success playing out in the second half. Tegan (Bowie) had one v ones almost the whole second half and again we created so many chances but we didn’t score until the 75th minute.

“When the first goal went in then the mentality of the team changed and everyone felt a little more confident and less frustrated and the goals came at the end.

“It’s great win for us, it’s very important not only because we don’t want to lose more points with the top team also because it’s the last competitive game before the Cup Final. The moral of the team is totally different now with a good win at home.

“Again we saw the amazing mental strength that this team has.”

Make it a date folks – Celtic are in not one but two Cup Finals in December so let’s get right behind the teams at both finals starting on 5 December at Firhill.  Kick-off is 4.10pm (Celtic are away to Dundee Utd on the same day with a noon kick-off so watch the game on the TV then head to Firhill).
