Celtic v Glasgow City: Manager and Captain’s Pre-Match Comments on Tonight’s Top Two Title Battle

Celtic v Glasgow City kicks off at 7.40pm this evening and the match is live on BBC Alba. A win for Celtic will make the title race very interesting indeed and will also cement the Hoops as favourites for one of the two Champions League places available to SWPL1 sides this season. Here are the programme notes from manager Fran Alonso and the captain Kelly Clark…

THERE ARE 21 POINTS TO PLAY FOR…

It’s a very difficult game. It’s the two on-form teams in the country – we have six wins in a row and they have seven wins in a row, so it’s two teams in top form so that adds extra difficulty. They are 13 times champions, but on top of that, they’ve won every game since we have been back, so it’ll be a huge challenge. We can’t have a mental block from the last defeat against them when our performance wasn’t good, but we are in good form and I think we will put up a good fight and I’m positive we can play a good game and try to get the three points.

There are 21 points left to play for, so whatever the table says now, for me is absolutely irrelevant – it didn’t matter when we were in third and it doesn’t matter now we are second, and if we were top – it really doesn’t matter. There are 21 points and we need to try and get as many points as possible. The perfect scenario would obviously be to win all 21, but we know that is very difficult. But every game is worth three points reagrdless of the opponent – that’s why beating Forfar and Motherwell is just as important as beating City, so for us it’s always about the next three points, and lets see where we are in the last couple of game.

With their form, they will be a team that will be difficult to beat – we cannot make mistakes and will have to be at our best mentally and physically.

WE’LL GIVE OUR ABSOLUTE ALL

Fixture round two of the league campaign started off disappointingly with a defeat to Glasgow City but since then we have picked up 18 points out of 18 and put ourselves into a good position going into the last round.
As we learned on the first day of round two, City have recruited really well and are a very good side who know what it takes to win the league. They got a huge result against (the)Rangers on Sunday and they will go into Wednesday full of confidence and very determined to go on and defend their title.

We need a big performance from the entire group on the night. The staff will make sure we are prepared and it is our job to deliver on the park. We were disappointed with ourselves in the last fixture against City and so will look to correct our mistakes, give our absolute all and put in a performance we can be proud of on the night.
