David Turnbull outlined his thoughts on the mouthwatering Champions League match against Real Madrid, via the Daily Mail. The Celtic midfielder insists this group of Celtic players are in the running to write history for the club as they play the current European Champions. And after Celtic’s thrashing of theRangers in Saturday’s Glasgow Derby, the Celtic squad will be going into this European fixture full of confidence and ready to impose their own brand of football on their illustrious opponents.
Remember too that the last time Celtic played Real Madrid in Glasgow’s east end, back in March 1980, Celtic thoroughly deserved their 2-0 victory in that European Cup quarter-final, first leg tie. More recently, when a world-class Barcelona squad, with the likes of Messi and Iniesta, came to Celtic Park a decade ago, Celtic got the better of them with that famous 2-1 victory.
David Turnbull was asked whether the Celtic squad knew that they could add to this European success. “Yeah. Every game you play for this club, you know you have got a chance of writing history. That’s what the boys will go in trying to do. After the game, we might look back on it and think it was a great experience. It’s a great game and you grow up wanting to play in them. But going into it, we’ll treat it as another one and just try to play our football,” the scorer of Celtic’s fourth goal against theRangers on Saturday stated.
“Obviously it’s a huge game and the glamour that comes with it because it’s a huge team. But looking to the game, we want to play our own football and see what happens. It’s just the pressure that comes with being at Celtic. These are the ties you want and games you want to play in – and you still go into that wanting to win and trying to win.”
Ange Postecoglou’s in-form side has had a terrific start to the season and will want to continue that into Europe, as David Turnbull explained. “We want to give every game our best shot and get the results we want. If that was to qualify us through the group, it would be a massive achievement. It’ll be good to get it started on Tuesday and kick on from that.”
However, Celtic suffered two injuries during Celtic’s skelping of theRangers. Kyogo suffered a shoulder injury in the first minute of the match then falling over in the post-match celebrations can’t have helped either. He’s almost certainly out of tomorrow’s Champions League match. Carl Starfelt also went off injured holding his knee and will now also be a major concern for Ange Postecoglou.
However with Giorgos Giakoumakis and Moritz Jenz coming off the bench to replace the two injured Bhoys, Celtic was still well worth their 4-0 victory in the Glasgow Derby, according to David Turnbull. “Competition for places is huge. You saw against (the)Rangers the boys who came on and stepped into their places were brilliant. They didn’t look out of place.”
With the way Celtic are playing right now, Real Madrid could be in for a fright. With the quality of football being shown by the team, and the atmosphere in Paradise created by the Celtic support, Tuesday’s game could be another one for the history books.
Ange’s team never stop, not even for Real Madrid.
