Celtic v Slovan Bratislava: UEFA confirm referee appointment for opener

UEFA have confirmed the appointment of the match officials for Celtic’s UEFA Champions League opener against Slovan Bratislava. Brendan Rodgers’ side will be looking to win their first UCL opener as the Slovakian side arrive in Glasgow.

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will
take charge of the group stage clash with compatriots Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries assisting. Marc Nagtegaal will be operating as the Fourth Official.

The VAR team consists of Robin Dieperink with the Dutchman assisted by Carlos del Cerro Grande, from Spain.

Makkelie, 41, is a police inspector from Rotterdam and had sampled the Champions League nights at Celtic Park before. The referee took charge of Celtic’s 2-1 defeat to FC Bayern in 2017.

Celtic have actually faced Slovan Bratislava twice before, back in the 1963-64 season in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Jimmy McGrory’s Celtic side won both legs 1-0 but were beaten in the Semi Finals of the competition.
