Celtic working hard to sign Premier League midfielder, according to report

James McCarthy has been linked with Celtic for a number of transfer windows, the Irish midfielder is currently with Crystal Palace but Eurosport are claiming that the Scottish Champions are ‘working hard’ to sign the 30-year-old.

The report claims that the club are working on a recruitment plan to seal a deal to bring the midfielder to Celtic Park.

Celtic need new life and purpose injected into their squad in 2021 and the club are working hard on a recruitment plan to land James McCarthy.
They have long-admired the Crystal Palace midfielder and feel his style of play and enthusiasm could help invigorate the side, who currently trail Rangers by 16 points.
McCarthy grew up as a Celtic supporter and is aware of the interest. Sources say he would be keen on the move as he is currently not figuring for Palace in the Premier League.

The former Hamilton and Wigan midfielder grew up a Celtic supporter and has been linked a number of times in his career. Neil Lennon is well stocked in the midfield area and the report could be well off the mark due to Celtic’s depth as well as the high wages that someone like McCarthy is likely to demand.

With Brown, McGregor, Ntcham, Turnbull, Christie, Rogic and Soro all vying for midfield positions, it is unlikely that the club would have made a move for McCarthy. Lennon will know that there are more pressing areas to strength if the club are to secure 10IAR than another central midfielder. Although if someone like Ryan Christie or Olivier Ntcham were to be sold, Celtic could turn their attentions to the Celtic supporting midfielder.

McCarthy has played just five games for Palace this year and with his deal running until 2022, Celtic would need to rely on both the player and club wanting the move to go through.
