Celtic’s defence still needs bodywork, according to journalist

Celtic’s stellar form continues to rumble on – but there are still inconsistencies in the way the team plays.

That is largely down to how Ange Postecoglou plays – action-packed football which can leave defences exploited – but for now, whilst teams are still figuring Celtic out, Ange will continue to play how he sees fit.

Easily enough, everybody can see that Celtic lack proper defensive depth, though – Josip Juranovic’s arrival has made things much easier in the right-back berth, but with certain players still injured, there is room for a couple more additions.

Stephen McGowan, speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, felt that if Celtic were to become clear contenders for the title then defensive reinforcements were imperative.

I think a right centre back and a left sided centre back, if you remember Starfelt came in he started on the left side of the two with Stephen Welsh on the right. He looked uncomfortable on the left and then he switched with Welsh and still looks uncomfortable.

Starfelt has admittedly not had the brightest start to life in Glasgow – compounded by his comedic own goal in Alkmaar the other night – in which Celtic were fortunate not to have collapsed at the hands of the Dutch outfit as Ange’s men survived a scare to make the Europa League group stages.

However, with Liam Scales arriving as part of a new-look youthful defence, McGowan still believes one more centre-back is needed as Christopher Jullien remains out with a long-term injury.

I’d be surprised if he didn’t try and bring in, certainly on loan, a center back on the left side.

The thinking was Ben Davies but he ended up at Sheffield United.

There was one or two from Manchester City and Itakura was about but Manchester City were looking for a big loan fee for him.

So Celtic have been looking at one or two but there is a conspicuous absence of speculation right now.
