Celtic’s defence will need attention after the departures of Jozo Simunovic and Jonny Hayes

Sometimes it can take a few departures to spark a team into action in the transfer market, and it does look like Celtic will need to make some defensive additions.

The BBC confirmed the news that Jonny Hayes was leaving the club at the end of his deal, while it was also a surprise to see that Jozo Simunovic would be departing.

It went under the radar that his contract was expiring and Celtic opted not to take the option to renew it.

On paper it’s completely understandable that both players were allowed to go, but it does mean that some additions will need to be made.

Lenny’s squad looks okay at full back, the right hand side is well stocked with Jeremie Frimpong, Hatem Abd Elhamed and the returning Anthony Ralston for emergencies, while Bolingoli and Taylor will fight it out for the left back slot.

Ralston has been poor for St Johnstone this season and injuries could leave them weak on either side, so it would make sense if another option was added, but it’s not the priority.

The big concern comes in the middle, where Christopher Jullien and and Kristoffer Ajer are the only real options, as the other choices would be players playing out of positon.

We still don’t know if Ajer will stay this summer, while Bitton and Abd Elhamed can fill in at centre back, but there’s no way you would want them playing there for a sustained run of games.

That means at least two more central defenders are needed, possibly even three if Ajer moves on. Hopefully there’s a plan and signings won’t be too far away, but it could be a weak area of the team if any new signings need time to settle.
