Celtic’s greatest team: Pre-World War 2 – the story so far

Our Foundation – The Celtic Way, Celtic’s greatest team: Pre-World War 2 – the story so far…

With all the nomination for the defensive positions now published, it’s great to see the first combinations of our unique Willie Maley Celtic XI coming through. I asked my colleagues at the @celticparkevents Stadium Tours team for their thoughts on who would occupy the goalkeeping and ‘back three’ positions if they were picking that team today and it is noticeable that 10 of the 14 Tour Guides who have responded so far have chosen a unique set of four men, whilst the four others agreed on who should make up Willie Maley’s defence.

Perhaps that shows just how competitive this selection process is going to be.

Here is the story so far from the perspective of the Celtic Park Stadium Tours team, with some of those making selections named and others remaining anonymous.

Selection 1 (from Ken Ross) – Davie Adams; Alec McNair, Willie Loney & Joe Dodds.

Selection 2 (from @ManusGOK) – “What a difficult choice, Matt. I’m going for… John Thomson; Alec McNair, Jimmy McStay & Joe Dodds.”

Selection 3 (from Alan Shields) – Johnny Thomson; Alec McNair, James Kelly & Jimmy Hay.

Selection 4 (from @Martingorman7) – “Tough choice having to pick between Sunny Jim and Alec McNair! Defence would have to be McNair, McStay and Dodds with Charlie Shaw in goals of course. Got to have the Holy Trinity in defence!”
Charlie Shaw; Alec McNair, Jimmy McStay & Joe Dodds.

Selection 5 – “Shaw, McNair, Dodds and Loney for me, Matt. Would have seriously thought about Sunny Jim but I can’t leave out McNair!”

Charlie Shaw; Alec McNair, Willie Loney & Joe Dodds.”

Selection 6 –

“Impossible to leave John out.”

John Thomson; Alec McNair, Jimmy McStay & Joe Dodds.
