Celtic’s hugely significant victory at Ibrox

26 years ago today, we won the league cup. A win that gave us belief we could win the title.

26 years ago today Ibrox was decked in green and white as we lifted the league cup after goals from Marc Rieper, Henrik larsson and Craig Butley gave us a 3-0 win over Dundee United.

The supporters partied as Roll with it was blasted out and the players joyfully paraded the trophy, what a day it was.

It was only our second trophy of the decade and our first league cup success in 16 years.

It was a vital victory in more ways than one. Firstly it was great to sample that success of winning a trophy again. The 90s were really dire in that department.

Secondly it gave the players priceless belief that they could go on and win the title in a campaign that was besieged by nerves.

By sampling that winning feeling they wanted more, they had the taste for success, and boy did it work as we kicked on and won the title come May.

Everyone thinks of that last day win over St Johnstone when they think of stopping the dreaded ten, but that day at the end of November was just as big a factor.

It gave the players belief, it showed them they could be winners, and winners they became.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.
