Twenty-five years ago today, Celtic lifted the League Cup after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Dundee United at Ibrox. Wim Jansen tasted his first piece of silverware in the 1997/98 season, which ended an enormous wait for the trophy, with the last win coming in the 1982/83 season.
Goals from Rieper, Larsson and Burley sealed the win as Ibrox turned Green and White for the League Cup winners as the club enjoyed some well-earned success. It would also give Celtic the belief to go on and win the league after what had been a tough start to the season.
Celtic: Gould, Boyd, Mahe, McNamara (Annoni 90), Rieper, Stubbs, Larsson, Burley, Thom (Donnelly 80), Wieghorst, Blinker (Lambert 88).
Goals: Rieper 21, Larsson 24, Burley 59 .
Dundee Utd: Dykstra, Skoldmark (McSwegan 57), Malpas, Pressley, Perry, Pedersen, Olofsson, Zetterlund, Winters, Easton, Bowman.
It was a huge result, especially with the memory of the League Cup defeat to Raith Rovers still fresh in the memory for so many. Jansen had taken a team that were seen as being ‘nearly men’, recruited well and had them playing in a fashion that pushed the club back where it belonged.
